01/14/16 National Mentoring Month

In honor of ‪#‎NationalMentoringMonth‬ here is another real example of how mentoring makes a difference at ‪#‎FriendsofChildrenandFamilies‬.
Meet John (not his real name) who is 15 years old and lives with his mother. He does not do so well at school and reads at an elementary grade level. John has not seen his father in a long time and is an only child. His mentor noticed that John has male hygiene issues and no one has sat down with him to explain the benefits of taking care of his body. In addition to mentoring him, his mentor would take John weekly to trips to the Dollar Store to purchase hygiene products. John now likes being clean and understands the importance of good hygiene. John shared with his mentor that he is interested in girls and they discussed how to be a gentleman and have respect for these young ladies.

Just another small example how a mentor can fill a gap, prepare our youth for Independent Living skills and for their future!
